The history of tea production in Mount Meng dates back over two millennia and is well-documented in ancient texts. Poems and writings from different periods have praised the exceptional qualities of Meng Ding tea. For example, during the Qing Dynasty, Zhao Yi wrote, “The famous tea from the mountains excels at Meng Ding, even more so at the Shangqing Peak. The tea garden with seven tea trees excels even more. It is said that the tea trees were planted by the eminent monk Ganlu Huizenshi and have been thriving for two thousand years, never withering or growing. This tea has slender, long leaves, a sweet and clear taste, a yellow and emerald color. When you pour the tea into the cup, fragrant clouds envelop it, coalescing and not dispersing. Because of these unique qualities, it is known as the ‘Immortal Tea.’ It is offered as tribute each year, weighing 335 jin (approximately 167.5 kg)…” (Zhao Yi’s “Meng Ding Tea”).

Meng Ding tea has been a tribute tea from the Tang Dynasty onward and is considered one of the most famous tribute teas in Chinese history. Meng Ding Huang Ya is the general term for the famous teas produced on Mount Meng. During ancient times, teas sent to Chang’an, the capital, were predominantly fine and tender loose-leaf teas, including varieties like Leiming, Wuzhong, Queshe, Niaozui, Baihao, and others. Later, compressed teas such as Fengbing and Longtuan became more prevalent.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, some traditional tea varieties were preserved and improved. Notable Meng Ding tea types include Ganlu, Shihua, Huang Ya, Mi Ya, Wanchun Yinye, Yuye Changchun, and others. In the early 1950s, Huang Ya was the primary product. Recently, Ganlu has been dominant, but Meng Ding Huang Ya continues to be produced and remains a precious yellow tea.

Brewing Method

To brew Meng Ding Huang Ya, it is best to use clear mountain spring water and transparent glass teacups. The teacup should be 10-15 cm tall with a mouth diameter of 4-6 cm. Use approximately 3 grams of tea per cup. The brewing process is as follows:

  1. Preheat the teacup with boiling water, clean the teacup, and wipe it dry to prevent tea buds from sticking to the cup.
  2. Place around 3 grams of Meng Ding Huang Ya in the teacup.
  3. Pour hot water (about 70°C) quickly into the cup, filling it halfway. This ensures that the tea buds are soaked uniformly. Afterward, pour water until the cup is about 7/8 full.
  4. Cover the teacup with a glass lid. After approximately 5 minutes, remove the glass lid.

When brewing Meng Ding Huang Ya, you will observe the tea buds gradually standing upright, with bubbles rising and falling. As you open the glass lid, a wisp of white mist gently ascends from the cup and slowly dissipates. After appreciating the tea, lift the cup to savor its aroma before enjoying the taste.
